RSS feed issues
Posted by hyedad@gnatcreek.org Hakimian on August 17, 2023 at 6:15 amDoes anyone besides me use the RSS feeds? It seems a change was made a couple of weeks ago that broke all the feeds, the links in the feeds (using the feedbro browser plugin) are all invalid. I emailed and got a unfortunately unhelpful response and then silence.
In order to consume content, I need to be able to get access to the mp3s of the podcasts I follow. I try to listen at work and watching video or being tied to my browser does not work. At this point, it takes me quite a bit of effort to get an mp3. On one of my browsers, if I navigate to the particular episode and hit download, it gives me an option to download the audio. That at least gives me what I want, thought it is several clicks to get to it. On all my other browsers, hitting the download does nothing.
Hopefully someone can take a bit of time to look into this and make consuming the content here more useful to all.
While writing this, I noticed that the input box goes out of its way to bypass a normal input form and as a result does not allow me to spell check. All in all, using this site has become quite frustrating.

Karl,
Can you tell me which RSS feeds you were using and which shows you’re interested in? We can see what we can do to get it redirected automatically for you, or worse case get you the new feeds that you can input into your podcast catcher.

The most useful feed I used to have was at https://crosspolitic.com/feed/podcast. It simply gave me a link to the mp3 of the latest podcasts. The link at https://flfnetwork.com/feed/ does not look like it has been updated since late July.
I really don’t care where I get the feed from as long as I can get a link to mp3 of the podcasts I’m interested in.
Mostly I listen to
crosspolitic
Daily news breif
Rebel podcast
The comedian next door
But I’m likely to click on anything else that looks interesting.

This morning is a good example of how frustrating things are getting. The feed at https://crosspolitic.com/feed/podcast did update, but th links are invalid. While that link shows that the Daily News Brief has been dropped, going to the podcasts on flfnetwork.com and drilling down to daily news brief you will find that today’s new brief is not yet available. The feed at https://flfnetwork.com/feed/ still has not been updated.
So at this point, I can’t even get to the content that I know is there.
On another topic, trying to reply here with quick reply did not work. The post button was greyed out and I could not figure out what it was wanting. The reply button that I’m using now works, but constantly throws errors about not being able to show the preview.

Looks like the cross politic show is also in the same boat. The feed at crosspolitic.com is updated but invalid and the content here (and in the app) has not yet been updated.

Karl,
I apologize for the issues you are facing. As you know over the past year or so we’ve been working to transition things over to a more stable/cancel proof platform for our content. I’m sure you heard about how Vimeo recently shut us down without warning and we had to scramble to switch to the new PubTV app we were working on. Fortunately we were at the end and so we were able to pivot quickly. Unfortunately when that happens, some things get missed and can be bumpy until we get all the kinks worked out.
Regarding the audio feeds, here’s the source RSS feeds that you should plug into your Podcast Catcher to get the latest audio podcasts. This is the source of truth for the audio versions of the site, and when an episode is uploaded here the RSS feeds are immediately updated.
This is the global feed, it has every show on the network:
https://app.dropwave.io/feed/account/64cb6318-903f-4389-a085-55cdd57b93a9
This is the individual feeds for the shows you mentioned:
CrossPolitic – https://app.dropwave.io/feed/show/crosspolitic-show
Daily News Brief – https://app.dropwave.io/feed/show/daily-news-brief
Rebel Podcast – https://app.dropwave.io/feed/show/the-rebel-podcast
The Comedian Next Door – https://app.dropwave.io/feed/show/the-comedian-next-doorNow on your point regarding the CP feed, can you explain a little more by “the links are invalid”? That https://crosspolitic.com/feed/podcast actually redirects to the proper link above, and the audio links work for me when I copy and paste them into the browser, and in my podcast catcher (pocketcasts). Any more information you have there will help me troubleshoot with you.
Regarding the URL https://flfnetwork.com/feed/, this is actually the feed for the website, not specifically the podcast shows, and is only updated when information is added to the website (news content, media, etc). It’s a built in function of our website platform. I would recommend you use the above links which is exactly what you’re looking for.
Thank You

That feed would certainly provide what I wanted if it worked. Like the one on crosspolitic.com, it has not working links. Please try it out with the freebro plugin to either firefox or chrome to see what I’m talking about.
-
Karl,
I could not find this “freebro” plugin you mentioned. Can you link so it?

Sorry about the mispelling. Not sure how I sent freebro. Anyway the link should work.
addons.mozilla.org
Feedbro – Get this Extension for 🦊 Firefox (en-US)
Download Feedbro for Firefox. Advanced Feed Reader - Read news & blogs or any RSS/Atom/RDF source.

I downloaded this both in Firefox and Chrome, added the CP link, and it pulled in the feed. I was able to click on the “Enclosure: the-thriving-economy-in-tough-times-freedom-economy-index-w-redballoon.mp3” and I was able to download the mp3 file by right clicking on it and saving the file, and I was able to click on it and it opened the mp3 in a new tab and was able to play.

OK. That’s interesting. How this used to work was clicking on the title took me to the audio. Frankly, I’ve never seen that link at the end of the description as I usually just click from the icon at the top and not open up the details of each feed. Is it possible to update the RSS feed to restore the main link?
In the mean time, this should help quite a bit. Thanks.
On a related topic, why does pubtv.flfnetwork.com not know who I am? I’m logged out when I click on my club content and when I try to login it does not know who I am. I created a new (same account name/password as on flfnetwork.com) and it says I’m not subscribed.
